Graduate School Application Procedure and Requirements

  • Apply Yourself Application: The Graduate School requirements include completion of the Graduate School application. This application should be completed first as you will need your Graduate School Application Number (Apply Yourself ID - found in the upper right corner of the printed copy of your Graduate School application) in order to complete our departmental application requirements. You must indicate the appropriate program code of the major and degree for which you are applying. Use only one of these codes. The codes for our programs are:

    • PhD - 019660208
    • MS - 019631508
    • MCS - 019639508
  • Statements: The Graduate School requires three statements to be uploaded. The first statement required is the statement of purpose which should be the same as the one required for the Computer Science online application, please follow our directions for this statement of purpose. The second statement is a diversity statement and the third statement is a self motivation statement. These are points which should be addressed in your statement of purpose and may not require a separate statement. If you wish to expand upon your diversity or self motivation, you may upload separate statements to the Apply Yourself statements #2 and #3 or upload the same statement for all required statements. However, the department only requires the one statement of purpose and will only view the statement which you submit to our on line application.

  • Application Fee: There is an application fee of $55 for domestic applicants or $75 for international applicants. The application fee cannot be waived and your application can not be submitted without payment. Payment can be made by credit or check card drawn on VISA or MasterCard. If this is impossible for you, please send e-mail to .

  • Transcripts: You must send transcripts from all colleges and graduate schools you have attended. Unofficial transcripts can be faxed to the Graduate School but official transcripts will be required if you are admitted and wish to attend the University of Minnesota. For more information, please see the transcripts page on this site.

  • TOEFL, MELAB, IELTS: International students must additionally send their official TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS scores. Please see the Graduate School’s TOEFL information page for more information.

  • Letters of Recommendation: DO NOT include the names and e-mail addresses of your recommenders on the Graduate School application. This will be required on the Computer Science department application only.

  • Supplemental Materials: The Computer Science program does NOT require any supplemental materials to be uploaded to your Apply Yourself Application.
