Welcome to the University of Minnesota’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CS&E). CS&E has 36 faculty members who provide leadership and expertise to our 600 undergraduate majors, and nearly 400 graduate students. Our faculty members are highly productive educators and researchers. They are international leaders in their respective fields and authors of widely used software and textbooks. The distinction of our faculty locally and worldwide is confirmed by their long list of awards and honors in research and teaching.
Our faculty are also adept at securing funding for their research. In two years, our research funding has soared to $40 million from federal, state and industry sources. We in CS&E are proud to be one of a select few computer science departments nationwide with multiple recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and 23 CAREER Award winners.
We provide our students with a broad undergraduate and graduate curriculum, based on the application and theoretical foundations of computer science. Each year the University awards approximately 150 bachelors, 120 masters, and 20 doctoral degrees to CS&E students. Our faculty and students participate in interdisciplinary research with groups like the Institute for Health Informatics, the Minnesota Population Center, and the Biomedical Informatics and Computational Biology program. We are part of a vibrant and dynamic university which offers dozens of student and campus organizations to guide and support our students through their academic journey.
Our department engages in interdisciplinary collaborations with various University departments and colleges, and University-wide research centers, such as the Digital Technology Center (DTC). We have also played a leadership role in the formation of several industrial consortiums located at the DTC and intended to strengthen industrial collaboration, including the Intelligent Storage Consortium (DISC) and the Data Mining Consortium (DDMC). Additionally, CS&E receives generous support from members of local industry through the Computer Science Associates (CSA), a department advisory council consisting of the members of local industry.
The combination of all of these elements makes CS&E an active and exciting environment, and serves us in our goal of providing excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research and discovery, and service and outreach to industry and community.
