Professional Information
Rick Smith is a writer, educator, and information security consultant. As of now (2003) he's published two books: "Internet Cryptography" (Addison-Wesley, 1997) and "Authentication: From Passwords to Public Keys" (Addison-Wesley, 2002) as well as numerous articles and papers.
Rick is particularly interested in security architecture and engineering: this includes both the development and assessment of information security system designs and implementations. In practice, a lot of his work has been in the "security assurance" area: producing documents required by various authorities to show that a system achieves its security objectives. This has included work on DITSCAP, Common Criteria, and cryptographic verification projects. Rick was lead systems engineer for the high-assurance Standard Mail Guard that handled SMTP e-mail in military command centers.
Rick's educational activities include part-time teaching at the University of St. Thomas and regular participation in computer security conferences as a lecturer.
