How do I find software on the UNIX systems and set up my account to use it?

You can view the available modules online or type module avail at your shell. When you see the module with the software you want, type module initadd modulename . Then, log out and log back in to your UNIX account. The software should now be available. For more information see the available Module help.

Where do I learn more about using UNIX?

We recommend “Learning the UNIX Operating System,” published by O’Reilly & Associates. It provides a short introduction.

Also, the ACM Student Chapter offers free Intro to UNIX classes each quarter.

How do I get added to a specific group for research, grading, or class web page maintenance?

Ask the professor in charge of the group or class to send email to . Requests directly from grad students cannot be processed without the permission of the relevant faculty member.

What do I do if my code won't compile?

If you suspect that the problem is due to missing libraries or a bug in the compiler, please send the relevant error messages to . Otherwise, please consult the documentation or members of your group. Systems Staff is not able to assist you in code writing or debugging.
