Irene From Wins Two Norwegian 'Innovator' Awards

March 21, 2005

Irene From, a Fulbright Scholar studying in the CS department this year, has recently received national acclaim in her home country of Norway. In the past month, From's pioneering work in mobile technology has been honored by two Norwegian organizations who celebrate accomplishments of women innovators.

From, who leads a Norwegian mobile technology company called 'TendoTech', was selected as one of 11 finalists in the Norwegian national award for Innovative Women. Leaders of 200 top female-led Norwegian companies were nominated for this award.

From also won the first-ever 'Fredrikke Quam' award, which honors a female entrepreneur under the age of 30. The award is given to a female whose innovations benefit the region surrounding Bergen, Norway.

From's company, TendoTech, provides mobile systems monitoring on a user's cell phone. To date, product users include marine (fish farm) and aqua (water control system) companies who need to monitor temperature and/or weather conditions at equipment scattered at remote locations. System users can not only monitor the equipment via their cell phone, but also can be alerted when certain events take place. In some cases, the user can even take corrective actions, such as regulating temperatures, via their cell phone.

Here in the CS department, From is a member of the new 'Mobile and Ubiquitous Technology' branch of GroupLens Research, and is studying under the guidance of Loren Terveen. Her research here involves the study of Moblogging.
