The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has awarded the distinction of fellow to Professor Vipin Kumar, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The ACM is the world's oldest and largest professional organization dedicated to the advancement of computer science and information technology. The ACM Fellows Program honors outstanding ACM members for their achievements in computer science and information technology and for their contributions to the organization's mission. The selection process is highly competitive: Each year only about 20 individuals are selected as ACM Fellows. Kumar is the first Institute of Technology faculty member to be named an ACM Fellow. (Professor Emeritus Gordon Davis of the Department of Information and Decision Sciences, Carlson School of Management, is the only other University of Minnesota ACM Fellow.)
Kumar's current research interests include high-performance computing and data mining. He has authored over 200 research articles, and has co-edited or coauthored nine books including the widely used textbooks Introduction to Parallel Computing and Introduction to Data Mining. He is the chair of the steering committee of the SIAM International Conference on Data Mining and is a member of the steering committee of the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining. Kumar serves on the editorial boards of IEEE Knowledge and Information Systems, Parallel Computing, and the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.
ACM will formally recognize its new Fellows at an awards banquet in May 2006.
