The Scout robot makes a State Fair debut

September 1, 2006

Professor Papanikolopoulos at the Fair

Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos spoke about Scout robots to passers by at the Minnesota State Fair on Aug. 29. The exhibit was part of the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology presentation.

Papanikolopoulos demonstrated the Scout’s abilities and let fairgoers operate the mini-machines. The robotic technology fascinated children at the presentation, who took turns operating and inspecting the robots, as well as testing the Scout’s durability.

The Scout robot is approximately the size of an aluminum can and resembles the shape of a barbell. The robot has sensors and a camera, and true to its name, it’s used to scout and explore. The machines collect visual data that can be seen on the remote screen of the handler – a feature that thrilled young fair goers.

The Scout is used by the U.S. Army and Papanikolopoulos says the machines could someday have a more local presence, such as being used by police for search and rescue, for example.
