A group of approximately 17 female CSE students and some faculty attended the Grace Hopper “Women in Computing” Conference on October 4-7 in San Diego. The CSE group was large, compared to some other schools.
The conference, put on by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is intended to spur the research and careers of women in the field of computer science.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Making Waves,” emphasizing the impact of women in technology fields. Former NASA Astronaut, Sally Ride and Shirley M. Tilghman, the president of Princeton University were among the featured keynote speakers. Six CSE students presented a poster.
At the conference, students were able to network with other women in the computer science field and visited with recruiters from large companies, including Google and Microsoft, both sponsors of the event. Other major sponsors include IBM, Hewlett Packard, Sun, Intel, Cisco, and Yahoo, many of whom also recruited CSE students and work with our faculty.
Funding for the student’s trip was made possible through sponsorships from Thomson-West, the CSE Department, the Institute of Technology, and UMSEC. In addition, eight students received a scholarship from the conference.
