CSE faculty, grad students urge Wayzata youth to explore technology

November 10, 2006

CSE Associate Department Head Maria Gini and a group of graduate students spoke to an auditorium packed with parents and grade school students on Tuesday at Wayzata Central Middle School as part of an initiative to interest kids in science and technology. Gini’s talk was entitled, "A new breed of pets – robots."

For the presentation Gini demonstrated the uses of the Sony AIBO robots – the same equipment used in the CSE department’s Undergraduate Robotics Lab. Gini and graduate students Shana Watters, Maitreyi Nanjanath, Esra Kadioglu, Maxwell Walter, Aaron Halfaker, and Mathew Staats spoke to students and then split into groups, allowing time for questions. The attendance was estimated at 400 people and the audience consisted of students ranging from kindergarten to the 12th grade.

The event was part of Wayzata’s Young Scientist Roundtable, a monthly program in which a speaker gives a presentation to students followed by a roundtable discussion. The General Mills Foundation and The Vernon James Pick Foundation help to fund the program.
