The IEEE Computer Society has awarded CSE Professor Shashi Shekhar, a Distinguished McKnight University Professor, with its Technical Achievement Award for his innovative work on spatial storage methods for road maps.
This is an annual award, which includes a certificate and $2,000 honorarium, for outstanding work in fields of computer science and technology, information science and engineering within the past decade. The IEEE Computer Society is one of the world's leading organizations of computer professionals, boasting nearly 100,000 members.
Shekhar is a leading researcher in spatial databases and spatial data mining. A major goal of his research is to understand the computational structure of very large spatial computations used by social and physical sciences as well as engineers. Early on in his research he developed the core technologies behind in-vehicle navigation devices as well as web-based routing services, which revolutionized outdoor navigation in urban environment in the last decade. His research results now play a critical role in evacuation route planning for homeland security and were recognized with the CTS partnership award this year for having a significant impact on transportation.
Shekhar is an IEEE Fellow and has a distinguished academic record that includes more than 180 refereed papers and two books, including a textbook on Spatial Databases. He is a member of the mapping science committee of the National Research Council and the National Academy of Sciences (NRC/NAS) and serves on the steering committee of the ACM Symposium on Geographic Information Systems. Shekhar is also a co-Editor-in-Chief of Geo-Informatica: An Intl. Journal on Advances in Computer Sc. for GIS.
