CSE alumnus Jim Pichler (MSSE 2003), chair of the Institute of Technology Alumni Society (ITAS) K-12 outreach committee, recently was featured at a local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Forum event at Brooklyn Center High School. The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and local businesses in an effort to raise awareness for the STEM campaign and help further its goals.
STEM is a statewide campaign sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota High Tech Association, Minnesota Business Partnership, and Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. It is directed toward high school students, their parents, and educators, to promote the importance of high school achievement, the value of rigorous courses, particularly math and science, and the need for early career and postsecondary planning.
Participating in the STEM Forum is one way that the Institute of Technology Alumni Society’s K-12 outreach committee is reaching out to children to show them that studying math and science can be fun and have a positive impact on their future.
Upcoming events for the ITAS K-12 outreach committee include participation this winter in the FLL (FIRST LEGO League) competition events, and TechFest at The Works on February 24, 2007. Look for these and more events coming soon from ITAS.
