The CSE department is proud to announce that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded CSE Assistant Professors Abhishek Chandra and Stergios Roumeliotis the CAREER Award. The award is the most prestigious honor given to new faculty, recognizing those likely to serve as academic leaders later on in their careers.

These two new awards mark the 14th CAREER awards won by CSE junior faculty throughout the last 11 years. The CSE department is very proud of this milestone and the recipients of this highly competitive award.

Chandra joined the CSE department in 2004. His research focuses on operating and distributed systems, and computer networking. Chandra has authored or co-authored close to 20 publications, including journal and conference papers and technical reports. He won a best student paper award in 2005 at IEEE's International Conference on Autonomic Computing and was also nominated for an ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Assistant Professor Roumeliotis joined the CSE department in 2002 and specializes in inertial navigation of aerial and ground autonomous vehicles, fault detection and identification, and sensor networks. His recent research focuses on distributed estimation under communication and processing constraints and active sensing for reconfigurable networks of mobile sensors. Roumeliotis is the recipient of the McKnight Land-Grant Professorship award and the NASA Tech Briefs award. He is also currently serving as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Robotics.

These new CAREER awards build on a long legacy of CSE department CAREER recipients, including: Nick Hopper, Yongdae Kim, Jon Weissman, William Schuler, Eric Van Wyk, Baoquan Chen, Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos, George Karypis, Victoria Interrante, Joseph Konstan, Zhi-Li Zhang and Mats Heimdahl.
