CSE Professor John Riedl testified in a Minnesota Senate Committee meeting on March 9, lobbying in favor of a bill that would ignite a study about the use of electronic data, specifically focused on Open Document Formatting (ODF). Sen. Don Betzold sponsored the bill, which the passed on to a Senate financing committee.

Riedl described ODF as, “A format everyone can use.” Currently electronic documents are not all in the same format, making it difficult to access some information. Riedl said a switch to ODF would mean that the formatting would be more accessible.

Riedl is a member of the CSE department’s Human Computer Interaction (HCI) group, studying the way people use and adapt to computers and various Web related systems. For more information about ODF, visit the ODF Alliance home page.
