A company called Recon Robotics was featured in a Star Tribune story this week, entitled “Minnetonka firm’s robot is on a roll.” The company markets and sells the pint-sized COTS-M Scout Throwable Robot to safety and security agencies throughout the country. CSE Professor and Director of the Center for Distributed Robotics Nikos Papanikolopoulos developed the life-saving technology with his students and together they founded the company in 2005.
The Scout can be thrown on to nearly any surface and gathers images and data to be viewed by the remote control operator. The technology saves lives by putting the robots in harm’s way, instead of people. The Scout is currently being used by the United States Army and various police agencies. According to the Star Tribune story, sales of Scout robots are starting to take off, with Recon Robotics now receiving two new overseas orders.
