In a Pioneer Press story this week about robotic cars that drive themselves, CSE Professor Nikos Papanikolopoulos, director of the Center for Distributed Robotics, weighed in on the usefulness of the Scout robot and developing more efficient robotic technology.

The news story highlights two Twin Cities companies that developed ‘robo-cars’ to help the military fight against roadside bombs. The Scout, developed by Papanikolopoulos, his students, and other CSE researchers, is used by the military in Iraq for reconnaissance purposes. A spin-off company called Recon Robotics now sells this technology to safety and security agencies.

In the story Papanikolopoulos discusses the problem of robots trying to do too much. He said that for his work, focusing on single-purpose robots was the most effective way to save lives and conserve resources using robotics.
