Nintendo’s Wii gaming system is known for getting participants up off the couch. When playing a tennis match, participants leap and swing around the controller as if it were a racket. But while the Wii may have been intended for recreational use, others are seeing therapeutic benefits. A story in The Minnesota Daily last week highlighted some perceived therapeutic benefits of the gaming usage in physical rehabilitation.
In the story, CSE Professor Loren Terveen commented on the technology trend. "Doing your physical therapy is pretty boring," he said. "If you can make it into an enjoyable activity where you're moving physically and going through motions that are helping you recover, and as a part of that you're playing games that are fun, it's just a great, creative use of the technology."
