CSE Professors Loren Terveen and John Riedl, along with CSE graduate students Reid Priedhorsky (project lead), Jilin Chen, Tony Lamm and Katie Panciera, published findings of a study of the widely popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Group’s 2007 Conference proceedings last week.
The mass popularity of this topic piqued the interest of local and national media. Terveen spoke on the National Public Radio show 'Future Tense' and on the local station, WCCO Radio. There was also a mention of the study on KMSP-TV in Minneapolis. Stories also appeared in The Minnesota Daily and the Shakopee Valley News.
The study analyzed trends the in Wikipedia’s authorship and vandalism occurrences. Findings showed that few people make changes on Wikipedia and that any damage inflicted is fixed quickly. However, the study also found that the likelihood to encounter vandalism on the site increases over time.
