The Minnesota Daily featured CSE professor Nick Hopper a story this week warning of the dangers of e-mail scams, also known as “phishing.” Phishing in when e-mails are sent from fake accounts in an attempt to defraud the recipient or trick them into providing personal information. The story spurred from an alert sent by the University of Minnesota administration to guard students, faculty, and staff against such scams.
In the story, Hopper said that even with just a student id number, savvy e-thieves can find social security information and damage a persons' credit. But Hopper went on to offer tactics to guard against this type of Internet predator. He suggested highlighting a link in the e-mail to see if the location matches where the e-mail said it should. If it doesn’t match, he said it’s probably a scam. For more information, visit “'Phishing' e-mail leads to fraud warning from administrators.”
