CSE graduate student Kelly Cannon was featured in a KARE-11 TV news story this week highlighting her involvement in University of Minnesota tours aimed at trying to interest young girls in science and math fields. Cannon, a robotics student, is quoted in the story discussing the serious need for more women to go into computer science.
In addition to tours, Cannon has been the driving force behind the department’s annual Kids Technology Day Camp held in August. The camp, supported by the University’s Digital Technology Center, is aimed at exposing middle school age children – mostly girls and minorities – to a collegiate atmosphere. The goal is to get them interested in science and technology. At the camp, students spend time in University labs working on fun projects they can take home. This year around 30 CSE graduate students volunteered for the event.
