The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) named CSE professor John Riedl one of 20 new ACM Distinguished Scientists. ACM names new Distinguished Members each year. This year's group includes computer scientists and engineers from some of the world's leading corporations, research institutions, and universities, who have made major advances in technology. The chosen members were tapped because their work has had a lasting impact on peoples' lives worldwide.
Riedl's research focus is in recommender systems and the social Web. He often speaks as an expert on the topic of online social networks. In 2006, Riedl was named a Senior Member of the IEEE and also won an Outstanding Paper Award at the Computer Supported Cooperative Work Conference. Riedl has also received the Commerce Technology Award, The MIT Sloan School Award for Innovation in E-Commerce, and at least half a dozen teaching awards.
