September 29, 2008

Controversial free software advocate Richard Stallman will speak on campus Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Stallman has been called radical and extremist due to his steadfast beliefs on software. He has been campaigning against both software patents and what he believes are excessive extensions of copyright laws since the 1990s.

Stallman will talk about the Free Software Movement, which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can cooperate to control their own computing activities. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system, often erroneously referred to as Linux, specifically to establish these freedoms.

Stallman is scheduled to appear at 175 Willey Hall at 6:30 pm on October 21, 2008.
