The award will be bestowed in March and begin on July 1, 2009.

The University of Minnesota Graduate School founded the McKnight Land-Grant Professorship program in 1987 as a way to recognize the school's most promising junior faculty. The program is intended to help advance the careers of assistant professors in the early stages of their careers and recognize them for their potential for significant future contributions to their respective field.

A selection committee determines the recipients for the award based on the significance of their research innovations, scholarly publications, potential to attract students, and for their overall contributions to their field. Banerjee's work specializes in computational learning and predictive modeling. Tian He's research focuses on Wireless Sensor Networks.
