The second round of TA offers is going out later today or early tomorrow morning. Here's an update on the process and people's chances for getting an offer for Fall.
I plan to make a small round of offers next week. I expect that round will fill the remaining open Fall positions. However, some people who accepted Fall offers will resign over the summer, and some classes will gain more than expected enrollment. So I will probably make a half dozen to a dozen more offers as they arise over the summer and at the start of classes.
These positions will usually for specific classes, and so applicants' backgrounds will be a major criterion when I decide who will get these offers. Information about other criteria used for making offers, etc. can be found online in the TA handbook.
Here is a further assessment of people's chances:
International students whose native language is not English must take and pass the SPEAK test, TSE, or TA English program before being considered for a TA position. A score of 50 or higher (equivalently a '1' or '2' English program score) is needed.
Continuing student who are interested in getting a Fall 06 position but who have not yet applied should do so as soon as possible. You need to apply for Fall 06 TA positions by filling in the online application. You need to do this even if you currently have a TA position.
Incoming student who did not get TA support as part of their admission to the university are also welcome to apply for any open positions using the online application form.
PhD students who currently have a TA position and have a strong record of TA work currently have priority for any additional positions. As I mentioned above, I expect to make a half dozen to a dozen offers over the summer and at the start of Fall; I expect the majority of these to go to PhD students who currently have a TA position. Unfortunately, we have a limited TA budget, and so I am not optimistic about being able to rehire everyone who currently has a TA appointment.
PhD students without a current TA position are the next priority level. They will get a TA offer if they are the best qualified candidate for an open position and have better qualifications than any PhD student with a current TA position.
MS students have lower priority than PhD students. In the past we've been able to make a few offers to MS students each semester; however, I'm not sure if that will be the case in Fall. MS students who currently have a TA position and are doing a good job in it have priority over other MS students. However, even if I am able to make offers to MS students I do not expect I'll be able to do so until late summer or the start of classes in Fall.
Graduate students who are not CS students will be considered only when there are no suitably qualified CS graduate students for a position.
CS MCS students are not eligible for TA positions.
