TA Update 5/12/07

May 12, 2007

We currently have a few more open position, and I plan to make offers for them in the next week or so. Once I make these offers we will have made our allotted number of TA offers. However, historically we've usually had a half dozen or so positions open up over the summer due to resignations. So I will be making offers as they arise. There are usually a couple offers made as late as the start of classes.

Class assignments will go out later this summer once we get more background information from the new incoming students.

If you have applied for a TA position, but have not yet gotten one, here is more information about your chances. As I said above, I expect to make a number of offers over the summer; however, we have about 30 people in the application pool currently, so we will not be able to make offers to everyone.

Further information about criteria used to determine who gets TA offers are on the CSE TA Handbook. However, in general:

PhD students who previously had a TA position and have a strong record of TA work currently have priority for any additional positions. As I mentioned above, I expect to make a half dozen to a dozen offers over the summer and at the start of Fall; I expect the majority of these to go to PhD students in this category. Unfortunately, we have a limited TA budget, and so I am not optimistic about being able to rehire everyone who had a TA appointment.

PhD students without a current TA position are the next priority level. They will get a TA offer if they are the best qualified candidate for an open position and have better qualifications than any PhD student who had a TA position.

MS students have lower priority than PhD students. In the past we've been able to make a few offers to MS students in most semesters; however, I'm not sure if that will be the case in Fall. MS students who previously had a TA position and are doing a good job in it have priority over other MS students. However, even if I am able to make offers to MS students I do not expect I'll be able to do so until late summer or the start of classes in Fall.

Graduate students who are not CS students will be considered only when there are no suitably qualified CS graduate students for a position.

CS MCS students are not eligible for TA positions.
