As new students arrive I'm getting questions from them about the TA situation. Here is a summary of the situation:
1) Currently all the TA positions for Fall are either filled or in the process of being filled. This means the chance of getting a TA position for Fall is very small. There is a chance that additional positions open up, but if the do (i) there will not be a lot of positions, (ii) the chance of getting one is small since we have a number of people still in the applicant pool.
2) New students interested in being considered for any positions that unexpectedly open up should fill in an TA application. We will contact, by email, anyone whom we will make an offer to.
3) International students whose native language is not English need to take and pass the SPEAK test (or have taken and passed the TSE) prior to getting a TA offer. Students who wish to be considered for Fall but who have not yet passed the test should sign up for it as soon as possible.
4) Applicants who do not get a Fall 07 offer will automatically be considered for Spring 08. Spring offers are made beginning in November. Although most Spring TA positions are continuations of Fall ones, we usually make 6-12 new offers for Spring.
5) The department gives preference to PhD students when making TA offers. MS students are welcome to apply, and will be considered in any cases where there are not qualified PhD students; however, the department does not expect to make any Fall 07 offers to incoming MS students.
6) If a Fall position unexpectedly opens up, we will contact the best candidate(s) for it by email. If we do not have any obvious candidates for a position, we will post a note here asking anyone who might be qualified to contact the department with more information.
