<![CDATA[TA Offers for Spring 2010]]> The first round of TA offers for Spring 2010 likely won't be made until late November or early December. Two quick reminders:

1) If you wish to be considered for a Spring 2010 position, but have not yet applied, please do so soon.We will start analyzing the Spring 2010 TA situation soon, even if offers won't be going out for a few weeks. If you applied for Fall 2009, we still have your application, and will consider you for Spring 2010.

2) As usual, we will not be considering M.S. students for the initial offers. M.S. students will be considered later in the offer process (i.e., in later December or in January) if there are no suitable Ph.D. applicants for the open positions at that time.

<![CDATA[TA Update 9/25]]> I haven't posted here in a while since the TA situation has been rather turbulent with more offers arising than expected. If you applied for a TA position for Fall and did not receive an offer we will keep your application on file for Spring. I plan on starting to look at Spring TA positions in November, with most offers being made in later November or December.

<![CDATA[TA update 8/7]]> There have been some resignations, so over the next couple weeks I'll be filling the resulting openings.

Here's an update on the chances of getting an offer: There are still a number of people in the pool, so the chances of getting an offer are still not great. However, I do expect to make about a half dozen offers over the next few weeks. Most future offers will be 25% offers. We are still considering only PhD students for TA offers.

<![CDATA[July 15 TA Update]]> Fall class assignments will go out this afternoon.

Just a reminder: if anyone with a Fall TA assignment is planning to resign, please do so by August 1. Thank you.

<![CDATA[TA class assignments will go out July 15]]> TA class assignments will go out the middle of next week --- probably on the 15th.

A couple other quick updates on the TA situation: first, if you have a TA but will be changing to an RA, please let as know no later than August 1st. However, if at all possible let us know before then --- this will make it easier to fill the position, and the person whom we'll be able to make the replacement offer to will likely appreciate knowing sooner as well.

Second, Fall TA positions are still filled, so any further opening will be dependent on resignations.

<![CDATA[TA Update 5/15]]> Due to the unclear financial situation for next year, there won't be a third "round" of TA offers. Instead, I'll make offers for positions on an as-needed basis starting now and continuing throughout the summer. What this means is that I'll be making only one or two offers in the near future, and then will make additional offers as positions open up due to either an improved budget outlook, or due to resignations.

I realize there is much concern over the TA situation for Fall, and am sorry the situation is not better. Unfortunately, the budget situation has left us with much less flexibility than usual. I do hope to be able to make a number of additional offers at some point. For example, we usually have about half a dozen resignations before the start of classes in the Fall. So I am hopeful that we'll be able to make a good number of additional offers over the summer.

<![CDATA[TA Update 5/11]]> I had hoped to make a third round of offers early this week. However, due to the financial situation I will be delaying this offer. I hope to make the third round later this week or early next week. My apologies for the delay.

<![CDATA[TA Update May 4]]> There will likely be a small (very small) round of TA offers at the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I understand there are still a large number of students looking for offers. I am hoping to be able to make additional offers beyond the upcoming round. However, at this point I need to wait and see how the budget situation develops; the budget may not be set until mid-summer. I understand this is frustrating for students who are waiting to hear about support. At this point we need to wait and hope for the best.

To summarize the current situation: two rounds of offers have already gone out. Most of these offers have been to continuing TAs. We still have a number of high priority applicants in the TA pool, including a number of current TAs who I have not yet been able to make offers to. At this point I'm only considering PhD students --- there are still enough unsupported PhD students in the TA applicant pool that it looks unlikely that I'll be able to make any Fall offers to MS students.

<![CDATA[4/30 TA Update]]> The second round of TA offers for Fall 09 will be going out later today or tomorrow. This will be a small round of offers as the budget situation is still unresolved. There will likely be a small third round of offers during finals week, and then offers will be made over the summer as needed.

Due to the budget situation there are a number of people who would normally receive offers whom I've not been able to make offers to. If the budget situation is resolved favorably, I hope to be able to make about a considerable number of additional offers.
