12/14 TA update

Most Spring 2013 TA positions are filled. However, the department will be making a few more offers between now and the start of classes. Recipients of those additional offers will be contacted by email.

Just a reminder: if you are a CS PhD student who does not have an Spring 2013 offer and are still looking for one please let Prof. Barry know. At this point I can't guarantee I'll be able to make you an offer, but I would like to ensure that you are on list of available TA applicants so you will be considered for any openings that do arise.

12/5 TA Update

The third round of TA offers is going out. There will be another round soon, probably middle of next week.

If you already have a offer for Spring, but wish to resign, please do so no later than this Friday (Dec. 7).

The second round of offers has gone out; the third round will go out within the next few days. Class assignments will be announced tomorrow or Wednesday.

TA Update 11/26/12

The first round of Spring 13 TA offers is going out today (sorry for the delay; the plan was to get them done sooner). A second round should be going out later this week or early next week. And class assignments for students who have a TA appointment will also be made later this week or early next week.

Spring 2013 TA Offers

Spring 2013 TA offers and class assignments will be made starting in mid-November. As usual, there will be a number of rounds of offers with the initial rounds focusing on students who had a Fall TA appointment, and on difficult-to-fill TA positions. Usually most positions are filled by the end of Fall semester; however, a few positions will likely not be filled until around the start of classes.

If you applied for a Fall 2012 TA position your application is still on file and you are under consideration. However, if you applied for Fall 2012, then got alternative support such as an RA for Fall 2012, but now wish to be considered for a Spring 2013 TA, please let Prof. Barry know you are once again available.

Course assignments will be made in late November or early December.

TA Update 8/13

We have had fewer TA resignations for Fall than usual. Unfortunately this means that there have been fewer recent openings than usual, and so the TA situation has not changed since the last posting. Specifically --- with the exception of one or two positions that require an advanced background in a particular topic --- all the TA positions for Fall are filled. There's still a small chance we will have one or two positions open up before or at the start of classes, but even if this happens there are still a large number of students in the application pool; so any one applicant's chance of getting a TA offer for Fall is very small.

The situation for Fall is anomalous. There are a number of students in the TA application pool who would normally have gotten a TA offer but who did not. We should be able to make offers to at least some of these people for Spring 2013 (the Spring offer process will start in November). Students who applied for a Fall 2012 TA do not need to reapply to be considered for Spring 2013.

No major changes since the last update. Students who have a Fall TA appointment but are planning to change to an RA are reminded that they should resign by the start of August.

Fall 2012 class assignments (for students who have a Fall 2012 TA appointment) will be out soon.

Reminder: if you have a Fall 2012 TA appointment, but plan to resign to take an RA position (or for any other reason), please do so sooner rather than later. This will ensure we have sufficient time to find a replacement, and will allow us to make an offer to someone in the TA applicant pool who has not yet gotten an offer.

If you have a Fall 2012 TA appointment, and might be getting a Fall RA offer but don't know for sure: the resignation deadline is in early August, so please clarify your Fall situation before then. Again, we greatly appreciate it if you could let us know sooner rather than later if you will be resigning.

If you are hoping to get a Fall TA offer, but have not yet gotten one, the situation has not changed significantly from the last update. Specifically, we are waiting for positions to open up due to resignations or for other reasons, and will fill new positions as they arise.

Fall 2012 TA Update 5/8

The third round of offers just went out. If you have applied for a TA offer for Fall, but have not yet gotten an offer, here is some information about your chances:

We still have about three dozen PhD students in the TA application pool. This is a somewhat higher than usual. Usually we have about around 10 positions (some 25%, some 50%) open up over the summer. So assuming we have roughly that same amount, we'll be able to make offers to a number of students --- but unfortunately not all --- in the application pool. Some students in the pool have higher priority than others, some have lower priority (see the TA Handbook for more details).

So at this point we need to wait to see whether positions open up due to TAs resigning, class enrollments growing more than expected, etc. We'll fill positions as they open throughout the summer and at the start of Fall classes.

Fall 2012 TA Update 5/7

The next round of Fall TA offers will go out tomorrow (Tues 5/8). After that offers will be made over the summer on an as-needed basis.
