4. CSci Undergraduate D/D Plus Policy
Students must complete all classes that are departmental
requirements for the CS&E degrees with a C- or better. This includes all
classes specifically required for the degree (e.g., Stats 3021, CSci
1901) as well as classes used for the upper division emphasis and math
elective. (Liberal education requirement classes must be passed with a
'D' or better).
A petition for a "D" grade waiver for a departmental requirement class
will be accepted only once and only if:
-
There is an acceptable explanation as to why the "D" was an
exceptional occurrence.
-
There are no other "D"s or "F"s in CSci required classes, whether
or not these grades have been superseded by later grades.
-
The performance level in the semester after the one with the "D"
shows that the "D" was indeed an exceptional occurrence. (These grades
must be in before the petitions will be accepted.)
-
The overall GPA is high enough to indicate that the "D" was an
exceptional occurrence (rule-of-thumb level 2.3, depending on the
number and nature of courses taken).
-
The course will never be totally waived. The student will still
have to make up the credits with another CSci class that would be
eligible as an upper division emphasis class, as long as the extra
class is not also used for upper division emphasis.
-
Students should be aware that this policy may change without
notice, and that they should not expect that "D"s will be accepted,
and certainly not on a routine basis. Requests must be made in writing
and address each of the points 1-5.
