Csci 5708, Spring 2004.

- The mid-term examination is reschedule to Thursday, March 25th
as per our discussion on 2/24/04.

Lab 1 is available now. Please ensure that you can log into your assigned Oracle account
this week. Please contact the TA if there are any issue with your Oracle account.

Pusheng Zhang will teach the lectures on 2/2 and 2/4. He will cover the scheduled topics
related to query processing and optimization.
Alex is a senior Ph.D. student in the spatial database group.
- There will not be any office hours on 2/2 and 2.4 due to travel.
- January 19th, 2004:
- Team formation:
Oracle account will be shared by teams of two.
Homeworks will also be submitted in groups of two.
- Wait list:
We are not likely to get additional TA support since Csci 5708
is an upper division elective class.
This will limit total enrollment in this class to 50 including UNITE
students. In accordance with
department policy overrides are not likely unless several
enrolled student drop out. Exceptions will be made for
well-documented exceptional cases,
e.g.
database graduate students taking WPE and
graduating seniors with MIS speciality.

The pre-requisite courses include current Csci 5707 or
Csci 4707 (Database I).
Relevant pre-requisite topics include conceptual data
model (e.g. entity relationship), relational data model,
normal forms (1-3), relational algebra,
basic SQL (select, project, join, aggregate query) and integrity constraints.
