Computer Scientists in Non-Traditional Technology Companies: Opportunities & Challenges
A discussion panel focusing on the growing involvement of professionals with Computer Science education and skills in non-traditional Information Technology companies. Perspectives from local industry will provide insight to the the drivers behind this trend; its benefits, opportunities, and various challenges associated with recruiting and integrating CS professionals; as well as being able to recommend/advise on how UMN can further/better this trend.
Maker Movement: Hands-On Exploration of Maker Technologies
Makers are people who use Computer Science, Engineering, and good old-fashioned MacGyvering to build new technologies for their everyday life. During this maker demonstration, you will get hands-on experience with technologies like Arduino, eTextiles, and littleBits that will give you a taste of what is happening in the movement. Aspirants of all levels of experience are welcome to attend.
Note: This is a hands-on workshop which will require some preparation ahead of time. Specifically, we ask that you bring a laptop and install the Arduino environment on it before the workshop. Arduino is free and instructions for installation are found here: https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
Because of the hands-on nature of this workshop, we are limiting it to 40 participants. Beyond this number, we will do our best to accommodate everybody, but cannot guarantee a kit for each group.
