Annotating software is an important activity throughout the software lifecycle, from requirements analysis through system maintenance. Users in various roles (customer, manager, programmer, etc.)are involved in computer-supported annotation activities. In these roles, they confront the delocalization problem-failure to see annotations on related items throughout the artifacts that are relevant to them.We classify delocalization of annotations along three different axes: lateral, longitudinal, and historical, and use a graph-theoretic model as a framework to show how an annotation system can overcome delocalization problems. We identify issues that arise when implementing an enhanced annotation system, and we discuss their resolutions in the AnnoSpec system under development.
