Located in Augsburg's Science Hall, the Physics Department has two large general laboratories, three specialized laboratories (vacuum technology, nuclear physics and laser physics/spectroscopy), a student research room, and a darkroom. Departmental computer systems include five Macintosh and three IBM PC compatible computers equipped with interfacing hardware and software for data acquisition, experiment control and analysis; a MicroVAX II with color graphics terminals and a laser printer/plotter and a VAXstation 4000/90 color work station with color hard copy unit, and several other PCs for study of digital electronics and general use. Other computers, including many Macintosh and IBM microcomputers, are available in the College's computer center. Six large telescopes are available for astronomical viewing. A new high vacuum laboratory has been developed with support from local industry and the National Science Foundation.
The Sverdrup Advanced Physics Laboratory, extablished in 1990 with a donation from Johan Sverdrup, includes a pulsed nitrogen/dye laser, IR diode laser, HeNe lasers and related instrumentation, as well as state of the art computer interfacing and control capability. The Physics Department also has equipment for acquiring and displaying real-time meteorological data including local and national weather measurements and satellite imagery through satellite downlinks.
