2014 Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award for Faghmous

May 27, 2014

CS&E alumnus James Faghmous (2013 Ph.D., advisor Vipin Kumar) won the University of Minnesota's 2014 Best Dissertation Award in Physical Sciences and Engineering for developing new spatio-temporal data mining methods to analyze large climate datasets. Each year the Graduate School recognizes the University's top recent Ph.D. graduates by presenting 'best dissertation' awards. The recipients receive an honorarium of $1,000. The University also nominated Faghmous' dissertation for the national "Distinguished Dissertation in the Physical Sciences and Engineering" award given by the Council of Graduate Schools, Washington, D.C.

Faghmous is currently a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Vipin Kumar's group. He is also the co-founder of Mode-sty, a fashion boutique that specializes in trendy modest dresses with sleeves. This is the second consecutive year that a CS&E graduate student has been selected for this award. The 2013 CS&E recipient of the award was Gang Fang.
